Scaly psoriasis patches on the scalp, ears and neck, cleared

Patient · Female, age 52

This case was written by Dr. Laura Cowburn, Doctor of TCM and Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta.

At a glance

Scaly psoriasis patches on the scalp, ears and back of the neck cleared to normal skin.

Presentation

A 52-year-old patient had scaly patches covering the back of her neck, her ears and her whole scalp.

Diagnosis

In TCM, psoriasis is generally linked to internal imbalances, most commonly damp-heat, heat in the blood, or blood dryness. This patient’s psoriasis was caused by damp-heat and blood dryness.

Treatment

  • Dr. Haixia Ni’s “Skin Five” combination — [LI-11 (Quchi), SP-10 (Xuehai), SP-6 (Sanyinjiao), KD-9 (Zhubin), LI-4 (Hegu)]
  • Local needles on the neck, ears and scalp to improve circulation — UB-9 (Yuzhen), UB-10 (Tianzhu), GB-19 (Naokong), GB-20 (Fengchi), DU-16 (Fengfu), DU-24 (Shenting), GB-8 (Shuaigu), GB-12 (Wangu)
  • Herbal medicine — two herbal mixtures, taken in turn

Result

The patches became smaller and smaller with fewer scales, their colour changed from red to normal skin tone, and they gradually returned to normal skin with no scaly patches.

Additional notes

One session every four to five weeks. She took one herbal mixture for 10 days, rested for 4 to 7 days, then took the other.

This reflects an individual patient experience, not clinical trial data.
