At Wellspring Health, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat a wide range of health conditions by addressing the root cause of imbalance in your body. Our treatments focus on reducing pain, improving digestion, balancing hormones, supporting mental health, and helping the body heal naturally.
The answer is simple: we do not directly treat problems/diseases; instead, we help your body become stronger and regain its balance. Then your body's natural healing power will fix the problems for you. Through consultation, Dr. Laura Cowburn will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your condition and overall health.

"I was referred to Dr. Laura Cowburn by a friend of mine, at that time I had a terrible pain in my heel which was affecting my ability to walk. Upon having several acupuncture treatments with Dr. Cowburn, the problem in my heel was gone and has not come back.
Not long after I did some damage to my right shoulder. Excruciating pain would wake me up if I lied on this shoulder. There was a dull pain deep inside my right shoulder and tingling & numbness in my right arm, too. Dr. Cowburn was able to remedy my right shoulder and arm with several treatments."
--- Damek F.

"Dr. Coburn is my go-to acupuncturist.
She looks at my overall health to start by checking pulse and tongue clues, not just my concerns.
I came to Dr. Coburn originally regarding the neuropathy in my toes. My doctor had given me sleeping pills to override the pins and needles when trying to sleep. The foot specialist 15 years later concluded " too little, too late " and suggested a supplement. Dr. Coburn increased blood circulation using acupuncture and Chinese herbs so I could fall asleep.
She has successfully worked on a lingering chest cough and lung phlegm.
When I am stressed, she grounds me so I continue to function efficiently. I trust her impeccably and would go to no other acupuncturist."
--- Cinna S.

"Dr. Laura Cowburn has been a vital part of my ongoing treatment improvement of my daily stress reduction in combination of my menopause symptoms. Thru her treatments weekly and the Chinese herbs she helped alleviate my hot/cold body temperatures, my acid reflux, improve my sleepless nights.
Her dedication to her craft, her commitment to her patients set her apart from others. I highly recommend her for everyone struggling with western medicine. Look to her for alternative ways of managing your health."

"I have been working with Dr Laura Cowburn for almost two years. I have improved significantly in all areas and trust me there is a long list. The most significant ones were the treatment of IBS, congestive heart failure and chronic pain. My gut is noticeably healing to the point I rarely have a flare. I haven't had a significant pain episode in almost a year. My heart is significantly better as confirmed by stress tests and ECG. I walk better, have better focus and concentration and am able to be more active. I can go out with confidence that my bathroom issues will be okay. This is a big deal! I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Laura Cowburn. "

These issues left me exhausted and discouraged.
Dr. Cowburn approached my case with meticulous care, blending acupuncture, herbal remedies, and TCM wisdom. The results have been nothing short of remarkable:

"For years, I struggle with chronic hives that caused relentless itching, discomfort, and frustration. I tried everything- over-the-counter antihistamines, pramoxine, and even prescription creams from my family doctor- but nothing provided lasting relief. Desperate for the solution, I was placed on a waiting list to see dermatologist, but in the meantime, I decided to try acupuncture.
To my amazement, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine provided relief I never thought possible. After just a few sessions, I notices a significant reduction in itching and flare-ups. As I continued treatment, my hives completely disappeared. By the time my dermatology appointment came up, I no longer needed it- I was already healed!
I am beyond grateful to have found Dr Laura Cowburn, an incredibly skilled and compassionate acupuncturist. From the very first session, I could feel her dedication and deep understanding for traditional Chinese Medicine. She takes the time to listen, truly cares about her patients, and approaches each treatment with kindness and expertise.
Thank to her, I found relief from chronic hives when nothing else worked. Seeing such incredible results, I continued treatment for other concerns, including my shoulder pain and abdominal mass, and once again, her healing hands made difference. What’s even more surprising is that I used to hate needles, but Dr. Cowburn’s gentle approach completely changed my perspective - now, I actually look forward to my next acupuncture sessions!
If you are searching for a knowledgeable, passionate, and truly caring acupuncturist, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Laura Cowburn. She had been a life- changing for me, and I am sure she will be for many others, too!"

The number of acupuncture treatments you receive will depend on your specific condition, its severity, and how your body responds to the sessions. Acupuncturists develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s medical history, needs, and overall health. In some cases one treatment session is sufficient to fix an acute pain, while in other cases the patient may need 10 or more sessions.
Acupuncture is generally not covered by Alberta Health Care (provincial insurance). However, it is commonly covered under private extended health benefits or company group insurance plans, often listed under paramedical services. Coverage typically requires the practitioner to be a registered, licensed acupuncturist in Alberta.
Most people who receive acupuncture do not report pain or other complaints, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). But, you may experience some sensations during your treatment. What you feel may vary depending on your pain tolerance and overall sensitivity.
Sometimes, your first acupuncture treatment may seem more painful than the following treatments. This may be because you are anxious or nervous about the treatment. The needling may also affect certain energy points or nerves in your body for the first time. As you get used to it and learn what to expect, your body will likely become more relaxed in future sessions, so it may hurt less or not at all.
Acupuncture needles generally penetrate the skin from 1/16 of an inch to 1.5 inches (roughly 2mm to 40mm), depending on the body area, muscle density, and treatment goals. Shallow, delicate areas like the scalp or face receive shallow insertions (1–5 mm), while fleshy areas like the hips or glutes can be treated with deeper needles.
Acupuncture needles are both sterile and one-time use. In modern, regulated practices, acupuncture needles are treated as single-use medical devices, sterilized during manufacturing, and disposed of immediately after a single treatment.
Modern acupuncture needles are predominantly made from high-quality, surgical-grade stainless steel, designed to be thin, flexible, and strong. They are sterile, single-use, solid, and hair-thin, featuring handles made of stainless steel, copper, or plastic, sometimes with a silicone coating for smoother insertion.
Acupuncture & TCM typically take 1–2 sessions to show improvement for acute conditions, while chronic issues may require 2–3 sessions to show significant results. While some feel relief immediately, others may require a series of treatments to achieve lasting benefits.
Your first appointment typically lasts 50 minutes, featuring a comprehensive, holistic intake history, a "pattern" diagnosis, and a personalized treatment plan. Expect detailed questions on your health history, diet, and emotions, followed by acupuncture and herbal treatments.
After a treatment, you may feel a deep sense of relaxation. However, some individuals might experience mild soreness at the acupuncture needle sites or feel fatigued. These side effects are typically short-lived and should subside within a day. Any mild discolouration or bruising that appears after treatment will usually clear up within a few days.
Practitioners may recommend a few steps to take care of yourself after your treatment, especially during the first 24 hours.
Contact your doctor or acupuncturist if you experience any unusual symptoms after your treatment.
