At a glance
Sleep apnea and severe snoring resolved by tonifying Yang and Lung Qi — back to quiet, machine-free nights.
Presentation
A 57-year-old patient came to the clinic worn down by sleep apnea. He had to wear a machine to sleep, and every night he was woken by its noise — so even with the device, he never got a good rest. On top of that, his severe snoring was disturbing his wife's sleep. Both problems were taking a real toll on the household.
Diagnosis
For this patient, the pattern was Yang deficiency together with Lung Qi deficiency. In TCM, the body's Yang and Lung Qi help keep the airway open and the breath steady through the night; when they weaken, the airway is more prone to collapsing and obstructing, producing apnea and heavy snoring. (It's worth noting that for other patients, sleep apnea and snoring can stem from Yin deficiency, or combined Yin and Yang deficiency, or from phlegm in the lungs — so the treatment is always matched to the individual.)
Treatment
Treatment paired acupuncture with herbal medicine to tonify the deficient Yang and Lung Qi:
- Tonifying Lung Qi with Dr. Haixia Ni’s Five Element Theory — an approach originating from the classic TCM text Huang Di Nei Jing (the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic), using [metal points, earth points, wood points]. Metal represents the lungs, earth represents the stomach and spleen, and wood represents the liver and gallbladder.
- Metal points: LU-1 (Zhongfu) and LU-7 (Lieque) — LU-1 is the front-mu point of the Lung meridian, which can regulate the lung organ and the Lung meridian, and LU-7 is the luo point of the Lung meridian, which can regulate and tonify the lungs
- Earth points: SP-9 (Yinlingquan) and ST-41 (Jiexi) — ST-41 is the mother point of the Stomach meridian, which can tonify the stomach, and SP-9 is the sea point of the Spleen meridian, which can improve metabolism
- Wood point: LR-8 (Ququan) — the sea point of the Liver meridian, which can soothe Liver Qi and improve the body’s Qi flow
- KD-6 (Zhaohai) — added to form the [KD-6, LU-7] combination, which can tonify Yin. Because Yin and Yang support each other and transform into each other, tonifying Yin can indirectly tonify Yang.
- LI-5 (Yangxi) — together, [KD-6, LI-5, ST-41] can improve air flow at the throat, an important part of the respiratory tract, and so help in treating sleep apnea
- Dr. Tan’s [Taiyin, Yangming] pattern — at the same time, the Lung, Large Intestine, Spleen and Stomach points together form this pattern, which can improve immunity
A herbal formula was prescribed to tonify Yang. For other patients the herbs might be adjusted to clear phlegm, to tonify Yin, or to tonify both Yin and Yang, depending on their pattern.
Result
The snoring stopped, and the sleep apnea resolved — he no longer needed to wear the machine at night. With quiet, uninterrupted sleep restored, both he and his wife could finally rest.
